All facts
- Jyotish uses the sidereal zodiac, which differs from the tropical zodiac by the ayanamsa, currently about 24 degrees.
- There are 27 nakshatras, and each spans 13 degrees 20 minutes of the zodiac.
- Each nakshatra is divided into 4 padas (charanas) of 3 degrees 20 minutes each.
- The Vimshottari Dasha system covers 120 years and is based on the Moon's nakshatra at birth.
- Jyotish counts nine grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Rahu and Ketu are lunar nodes, not physical bodies.
- The Lagna is the zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time of birth, and it changes roughly every two hours.
- Panchanga means five limbs: tithi, vara, nakshatra, yoga and karana.
- A tithi is the time the Moon takes to gain 12 degrees on the Sun, so a lunar month has 30 tithis.
- The days of the week are named after the grahas, for example Ravivara for the Sun and Somavara for the Moon.
- Saturn takes about 29.5 years to go around the zodiac and Jupiter about 12 years.
- Sade Sati is the period, about seven and a half years, when Saturn transits the 12th, 1st and 2nd signs from the natal Moon.
- Rahu and Ketu are always exactly 180 degrees apart, and their mean motion is retrograde.
- The Navamsha (D-9) chart divides each sign into nine parts of 3 degrees 20 minutes each.
- A Kundali has 12 houses (bhavas), each connected with areas of life such as self, family, work and relationships.
- In the Hindu Panchanga, the day begins at sunrise and not at midnight.
- A planet very close to the Sun is called combust (asta), and traditionally its results are considered weakened.
- The Sun and the Moon never go retrograde. Only Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn do.
- Traditional exaltation signs: Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces, Saturn in Libra.
- A planet is called vargottama when it occupies the same sign in both the birth chart (D-1) and the Navamsha (D-9).
- Muhurat selection looks at the panchanga elements and the rising sign at the chosen time.
- Amavasya is the 30th tithi (new moon) and Purnima the 15th tithi (full moon).
- Ashtakoota Guna Milan compares eight factors between two charts, with a total of 36 points.
- Jyotish is one of the six Vedangas, the limbs of the Vedas, and is traditionally called the eye of the Veda.
- Vedanga Jyotisha, traditionally attributed to Lagadha, is among the oldest surviving Indian texts on astronomical timekeeping.
- The Vimshottari Mahadasha order is Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17 years.
- In the Parashari system every planet aspects the 7th house from itself, and Mars, Jupiter and Saturn also have special aspects.
- Traditionally Jyotish has three branches: Siddhanta (astronomy), Samhita and Hora (predictive astrology).
- Panchanga calculations depend on the Moon and Sun positions, which is why the exact birth time and place matter.
- The Moon changes sign roughly every two and a quarter days.
- Astrology offers guidance for reflection and decision-making, and a chart is best understood with its whole context, not a single planet.
